  • Photograph of Soy sauce Soy sauce ¼ cup
  • Photograph of Honey Honey 1.4 oz
  • Photograph of Pear Pear 4.2 oz
  • Photograph of Garlic Garlic 8 cloves
  • Photograph of Sesame oil Sesame oil 1 ⅓ tbsp

  • Photograph of Walnut Walnut 1.1 oz
  • Photograph of Spring onion Spring onion 1.4 oz
  • Photograph of Black pepper Black pepper 0.1 oz
  • Photograph of Steamed rice Steamed rice 1.8 lb

Method

  1. 1 Slice the beef into wide, 5 mm thick slices, then lightly score both sides with the back of a knife to tenderize the meat.
  2. 2 Mix soy sauce, honey, pureed pear, minced garlic, sesame oil, and pepper to make the marinade.
  3. 3 Marinate the meat in the sauce for 30 minutes, turning it occasionally to ensure even coating.
  4. 4 Grill the meat over hot charcoal or in a hot cast iron pan, cooking each side for 2 minutes until just cooked through.
  5. 5 Brush with more marinade while grilling to keep the meat glossy and prevent it from drying out.
  6. 6 Sprinkle crushed walnuts, toasted sesame seeds, and chopped scallions on top, then serve hot.

With an appliance

  • Oven 28 min

Replace steps 4-5: place the beef on the top rack of the 240-degree oven for 5 minutes, rotate the tray halfway through, and brush with sauce at the last minute; the meat slices will cook evenly, requiring less turning, but will lack the smoky flavor.
